Does the life you dream of feel out of reach because of the environment you come from?

My name is Andrea Quijada, and I’m a first-generation Hispanic student. My journey began with humble beginnings, alongside my parents, who immigrated and left behind the life they knew to create better opportunities for their children. Although I didn’t have much growing up, I always aspired for more. Don’t get me wrong—I’ve always been grateful for what I had, but I’ve always known there’s so much more out there waiting for me.

I attended some pretty average middle and high schools and as I look back, I’m struck by the different paths some of my classmates took—some settled into everyday jobs, others started families sooner than expected, and some faced challenges that led them down difficult paths. Despite sharing the same environment, I chose not to conform. While I’ve always been ambitious, I once valued others’ opinions over my own dreams. Over time, I realized not everyone dreams big, which is why your environment and the people around you matter so much.

This realization made me question whether my dreams were too big for someone like me, especially when doubts began to set in. I often found myself questioning whether my goals were too ambitious, especially when imposter syndrome crept in. Despite these doubts, I always managed to overcome them by challenging myself to step outside my comfort zone and focus on the next goal ahead.

As I continued to navigate these doubts, I was fortunate enough to step into an environment that helped me see beyond them. I had the incredible opportunity to join the NMGZ community on the Chicago trip this year, and I can’t fully express my gratitude for the unforgettable experiences it brought me. What resonated with me most was hearing the inspiring speeches from the award winners at The Plank Center Milestones & Mentoring Reception & Ceremony. These speeches resonated deeply with me because I had the opportunity to hear firsthand from inspirational and successful speakers about their journeys. Their paths weren’t easy, but a common thread throughout their stories was the importance of their support systems and the environments that shaped them.

The gala may have been a familiar environment for those already successful, but for me, it was a glimpse into my professional future. Watching the award winners made me imagine standing there myself one day. Meeting incredible people and hearing their stories reinforced that I’m just getting started. My journey ahead is full of goals to give back to my community and make a meaningful impact and I am not willing to settle for less. This trip reminded me that the environment I choose shapes my future, and I’m committed to surrounding myself with like-minded individuals and the spaces where I want to be.

One memorable moment from the gala was my conversation with Geoff Curtis, another first-generation individual. His enthusiasm and openness about his own journey resonated with me. When he offered to connect me with someone at the Phoenix Suns—without me even mentioning it was my dream company—it shifted my perspective on the night. It made me realize that people who had faced similar struggles were now creating opportunities for others, like me, to follow.

Another key takeaway from this trip was being surrounded by other overachievers who genuinely want to make a difference. I learned so much from every single person, and I’m excited to continue growing through every interaction I have moving forward.

As a Hispanic woman in business, I know that my journey is not just my own—it's part of a larger story of breaking barriers and redefining what's possible for our community. I’m not just striving for success; I’m striving to create new pathways for others who come from backgrounds like mine. If you’re a first-generation student or someone who feels like your dreams are out of reach, remember this: It’s not about where you start, but where you’re willing to go. Surround yourself with those who uplift you, believe in your dreams, and never settle for less than you deserve. Your journey is just beginning.

Growing up, I was often told to be more realistic with my goals to make them attainable. But I know I will achieve everything I’ve dreamed of—and more. Thank you to the NMGZ community for showing me that it’s not a matter of if, but when.
