Turning Spaces into Stories: My First NMGZ Field Trip to San Francisco

One of my biggest struggles? Figuring out how to make a place feel like home.

When I first moved from Greece to New York for college, I stared at my empty dorm room, feeling

completely lost. A new country, a new city, and a space that didn’t feel like mine. How do you turn four

plain walls into something that reflects who you are—especially on a student budget?

I never expected to relive that feeling on my first NMGZ field trip to San Francisco. But this time, it

wasn’t just my problem to solve.

On our second day, we were split into teams and given a challenge: with a small budget and a mystery gift

card, we had 90 minutes to decorate the dorms at Napa Valley College. The goal? Show that with a little

creativity and smart decision-making, even the most basic space could feel warm and inviting. And the

best part—everything we bought would later be donated to students who needed it.

At first, I felt that same wave of uncertainty I had experienced in my own dorm. Where do you even start?

But this time, I wasn’t alone. My team and I strategized, made fast decisions, and worked together to

create something meaningful. We debated over essentials versus aesthetic touches, stretched every dollar,

and found ways to make each space feel unique. What started as a task quickly became something much

bigger—a reminder that a “home” isn’t about expensive décor; it’s about intention, effort, and a sense of

belonging.

But this trip wasn’t just about the challenges—it was about the people. By the end of the experience, my

fellow NMGZ ambassadors felt more like family. We came from different backgrounds, but we shared the

same drive, curiosity, and willingness to step outside our comfort zones. Every conversation, every

collaboration, every moment spent problem-solving together made me realize how lucky I was to be

surrounded by such incredible minds.

One of the most exciting moments of the trip for me was visiting Beautylish. As someone passionate

about the beauty industry, getting an inside look at a company I admire was beyond inspiring. As an

NMGZ ambassador, I had the opportunity to participate in a strategic challenge: Should Good Molecules

sponsor the CAPE Radiance Gala? If so, what approach should they take? In just 30 minutes, we had to

develop a main idea, a backup plan, and present our pitch to industry professionals.

This was the moment everything clicked for me.

In school, we pick our majors, study theories, and write papers, but here—I was doing the real thing. I

was using my creativity, making strategic decisions, and presenting ideas that mattered. It wasn’t just

about marketing; it was about storytelling, persuasion, and vision. And standing there, delivering our

pitch, I felt it. This is what I want to do.

Looking back, I never imagined that a single trip could change so much. Coming from Greece, I once

wondered if I would ever find my place in this field. But thanks to NMGZ, I now see that my wildest

ambitions aren’t just possibilities—they’re within reach.

This trip was more than a field experience. It was proof that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

Thank you, NMGZ, for turning what could have been just another trip into something life-changing.
