Saying Yes: How Building Genuine Connections Shaped My Journey in PR

As I dove deeper into my public relations studies toward the end of my undergraduate years, I've realized just how closely the field mirrors everyday life and the significant impact of embracing the word "yes." Building meaningful and diverse relationships is not only a foundation of PR but also a fundamental aspect of life itself. Public relations isn't just about managing brands or crafting messages; at its core, it's about people and how we connect with them.
My journey, particularly the NMGZ community's trip to Seattle a couple of years back, and the relationships I've cultivated throughout my college years post-pandemic, has significantly shaped my understanding of this aspect of PR and life as I prepared to graduate.
The NMGZ trip was a transformative experience. Immersing myself in a new environment with people from various backgrounds allowed me to apply the theories and strategies I've learned in the classroom, all while remaining authentic. It wasn't just about networking; it was an opportunity to engage with fellow students in similar positions, listen to their stories, and understand their perspectives. These interactions were a real-world embodiment of what public relations is all about—nurturing relationships rooted in genuine understanding and shared interests. Despite not being an avid traveler, I was eager to seize this opportunity, and I'm incredibly grateful I said "yes."
Throughout college, whether through group projects, student organizations like the Public Relations Student Society of America, or casual encounters, I've learned the true value of relationships and the heart that lies within them. Each person I've met has offered a unique perspective, enriching my approach to public relations. These experiences have taught me that effective communication isn't one-size-fits-all; it's tailored to the needs and values of the audience. Yet, at the same time, I've discovered that we're all more alike than we realize. Despite being born and raised in Los Angeles, I grew close with people from Georgia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey — all places I have never even visited. Who would have thought that I could form such close bonds with people I just met from across the country in just four days?
With these genuine experiences in Seattle and during my time on campus, I feel more prepared than ever to step into the world of PR, with diverse relationships, a deep understanding of people, and the confidence to keep saying "yes."
