A global perspective is like a tapestry, woven from the threads of unique experiences, diversity, and perspectives; it resembles a puzzle in which each piece beautifully fits into the grand design of our interconnected world. It’s a mindset I’ve long admired and strived to cultivate and one that guided me on an inspiring journey during my NMGZ community trip to Austin, Texas.

But what exactly is a global perspective? It transcends geographical boundaries; it’s a way of understanding the world. As Capital Placement defines it, it’s about “seeing and understanding how any situation impacts or relates to people around the world” [Source: Capital Placement]. It’s recognizing that every idea, every situation sends a ripple-like effect far beyond our immediate surroundings. As the Open Education Sociology Dictionary states, it’s a viewpoint that considers the world as “the sum of complex, interconnected parts'' and seeks to understand “the place or places of individuals, groups, cultures, and societies in the world and how they relate to each other” [Source: Open Education Sociology Dictionary]. In other words, it’s a lens that embraces the intricacies of our world, and recognizes it as the interwoven threads that create the grand tapestry that is our human existence.

Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who instilled in me a love for travel and a curiosity about diverse cultures. My journey toward a global perspective began early and has, thankfully, taken me to various corners of the world - from experiences such as competing internationally in archery, to teaching English to children in rural villages of Cambodia, visiting orphanages in the Philippines, and even attending summer camps throughout the east coast. All of these experiences have layered my understanding of the world, adding depth to the tapestry of my life.

My earlier trip to Austin back in 2025, gave me a profound understanding of the multifaceted benefits of a global perspective. Austin, being a diverse hub of people, cultures, and ideas, became the host to countless memorable experiences I shared with my fellow NMGZ community members. This journey brought together individuals from all across the United States, each with a unique story. For example, I remember that as early as the first night of the trip, I connected with one of the members whose journey had led them away from their Jehovah’s Witness upbringing. As someone who had embarked on my own faith journey during college, our conversations highlighted the impact that personal experiences have on faith perspectives.

Furthermore, we discovered that we shared a passion for traveling and had both spent time in Korea. As a Korean American who had visited Korea several times, I was so excited to learn that they had taught in Korea for a couple of years. This common ground led to enriching discussions about Korea, its culture, and our experiences teaching students in different cultural contexts, comparing Korean, Cambodian, and American school cultures. This connection ended up blossoming into one of the most cherished relationships I formed during the trip.

Another highlight from this trip was meeting our international ambassador from Copenhagen, Denmark. I deeply admired how his presence on the trip exemplified the intentional diversity that NMGZ trips aim to provide everyone. Engaging in conversations with him allowed me to broaden my perspective as I was able to learn about his cultural nuances and gain insights into European viewpoints. Our discussions ranged from intricate topics like the cultural versus personal aspects of religion and culture, to topics as simple and fun as how our respective cultures celebrated our parents’ 25th, or “silver”, anniversaries. Alongside sharing memories like lively karaoke nights and cooking challenges, I appreciated how these experiences underscored the importance of bridging cultural gaps and taking chances to understand different worldviews.

Exploring Austin together felt like a cultural exchange in itself. Sharing local cuisines and teaching one another about our countries’ trends helped showcase the richness of cross-cultural experiences. Even with the other members from various states, I cherished the opportunities to see the world through their own cultural lenses.

As the trip unfolded, I had the privilege of learning more about each person’s life and experiences. These personal details added so much depth to our conversations, and greatly enriched the quality of our interactions. I’m still amazed at how our diverse perspectives enhanced our discussions, which enabled me to view issues and events from angels I hadn’t previously considered - a vital component of a global perspective.

Cultivating a global perspective is a dynamic journey, intertwining listening, cultural awareness, and real-world application. At its core lies the art of listening, a skill that not only lays the foundations for empathy and cross-cultural appreciation, but also sparks innovation. Embracing these diverse perspectives helps to foster creative problem-solving and generate unique solutions to challenges. With a global perspective, we are encouraged to acknowledge that there are multiple interpretations for any situation and remain open to alternative viewpoints. In other words, a global perspective enables us to view problems, events, and news from multiple angles, which allows us to appreciate the world’s complexity more deeply.

My trip to Austin not only expanded my global perspective, but it also ignited a newfound urgency to integrate it into my personal and professional life. The beauty I’ve found in cultivating a global perspective is that it’s a lifelong process, a journey that evolves and adapts with each stage of life. Though I’ve been working on this mindset since middle school, this trip made me feel as if I was rediscovering it again for the first time. It emphasized the endless opportunities I have to learn and the value of understanding myself, others, and the world from diverse angles. As a recent college graduate, stepping into this next phase of life was filled with many feelings of fear and uncertainty. The transition from the structured contexts of school to the limitless possibilities of the future felt quite overwhelming. However, the lessons I learned on this trip, the assurance I gained from the people I met, and the connections I formed have all played a transformative role in how I approach this new chapter of my life. The global perspective can meet you in every phase of your life. It’s about continuously expanding your horizons and embracing the complexities of our interconnected world. This trip served as a reminder that learning never stops and that every encounter, every conversation, every person you meet is an opportunity for growth.

The connections I made with the people during this trip have given me a newfound sense of confidence and excitement as I enter this next stage of my life. Knowing that I can draw from the wisdom of these connections, and knowing that I have a global perspective to guide me, it makes the transition less daunting and instead, more exciting.

In the face of uncertainty, I will take comfort in the belief that the global perspective I’ve been cultivating will not only shape my personal experiences, but will also enhance my professional endeavors as well. It’s a mindset that encourages me to be innovative, empathetic, and a better collaborator. This trip has helped instill in me the belief that embracing the world with refined lenses will not only benefit me, but also allow me to contribute more positively to a global community.

With this, I embark on this new phase of my life more prepared, more assured, and more excited to welcome the opportunities, and even the challenges, that lie ahead, as I am confident that my global perspective will serve as a guiding light in this new chapter.

While I’m profoundly grateful to those who made this trip possible, I was recently reminded of the value of also extending gratitude onto myself for taking that leap of faith and saying “yes” to an experience that was so novel to me. At first, it felt like quite a peculiar concept to thank myself when there's so much beyond me I am thankful for, but with this in mind, I am genuinely so grateful for falling in love with such a memorable experience. So, thank you to Austin, to the incredible individuals I have met, to Mr. Bill Imada and Alexia Barajas, and to the global perspective that continues to guide my journey. Here’s to embracing the world before me with refined lenses!
