Exploring the Unexpected: How Travel Shifts Mindset

The gift of travel is perspective. I spent my whole life in Charlotte, NC, and as a result, I envisioned my entire future in the Charlotte area. Now that I have had the opportunity to meet amazing NMGZ folks from all over the U.S., my mindset has shifted. Even more so when we attended sessions with accomplished leaders in the Seattle area.

One story I connected with was that of the general manager of Westfield Mall, Navdeep Singh. He shared how he started his career at Westfield as a security guard. Another perspective-altering story I heard was during our visit to Starbucks. We met a woman who explained that her role in the company was in food menu creation. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. At that moment, I realized that when it comes to your career, the only limit is your imagination and drive.

I have embraced the idea that success isn’t just about following a preset checklist. It’s about exploring new opportunities, being open to change, and embracing the unknown. While I had a plan for my future, I hadn’t considered the many possibilities beyond what I thought was available. Hearing from new people who took unique paths reminded me that growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone. This trip has reshaped how I think about my future and inspired me to stay curious and adaptable.
