Every Good Thing Has a Beginning

Moving to the United States to pursue my master’s in communication at the University of Southern Mississippi was a significant step in my life. The transition has been challenging as an introvert, particularly when making new connections and friends. Early on, a professor introduced me to the National Millennial and Gen Z Community (NMGZ), but at the time, I felt lost and unsure of how I fit into this vibrant group.

Months passed, and I still struggled with the idea of putting myself out there. However, when the opportunity came to join NMGZ on a trip to Seattle, I decided to take a leap of faith. It was, without a doubt, one of the most spontaneous decisions I’ve ever made. The thought of meeting so many new people was intimidating, but I knew that growth only happens outside of your comfort zone.

The trip was more than just a tour of reputable organizations; it was a journey of self-discovery. We met with various executives who shared their career stories, their beginnings, struggles, and the setbacks they encountered along the way. A common thread in these narratives was that you don’t have to end up in the role you started with. This was a revelation for me, especially after experiencing the disappointment of not securing internships for which I had recently applied. Rejection had left me questioning my path and my capabilities.

However, one story, in particular, stood out and was shared by an employee at Starbucks. She recounted how she spent ten months applying for different roles at the company, going through numerous interviews, and facing rejection after rejection. Her persistence paid off, and she eventually landed a role that became a stepping stone in her career. Hearing this gave me a renewed sense of hope and strength. It was a powerful reminder that perseverance is critical and that every setback is just a part of the journey, not the end of it.

This trip to Seattle opened my eyes to new possibilities and roles I had never considered. It broadened my horizons and helped me see I am not alone in my struggles. Most importantly, it allowed me to make connections that I believe will last a lifetime.

Indeed, every good thing has a beginning, and for me, this experience with NMGZ is just the start. I’m excited to see where this journey will lead and the new opportunities unfolding. This trip has taught me that while the path may not always be clear, the willingness to take the first step truly matters.
