Walking into a room filled with executives from some of the world’s most influential companies can be intimidating. But as I sat in meetings with leaders from Adeia, JPMorgan Chase, Beautylish, Highwire, and Wells Fargo, I realized something powerful: our voices as young professionals are not only heard—they are needed.

Being the only student selected from Jackson State University’s College of Business to attend the National Millennial and Gen Z (NMGZ) Community Field Trip in San Francisco was both an honor and a responsibility. This experience gave me an inside look at industries I aspire to work in, challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, and reaffirmed my commitment to representation in corporate spaces.

Defining My Career Path

Before this trip, I knew I was passionate about marketing and the beauty and cosmetics industry, but I wasn’t entirely sure how to merge the two into a meaningful career. That changed when we visited JPMorgan Chase and had the opportunity to hear from Good Molecules, a skincare brand that prioritizes transparency and inclusivity.

Their presentation opened my eyes to the growing need for diverse representation in the beauty industry—not just in products but in branding, leadership, and consumer engagement. It was a moment of clarity for me: I want to work in beauty marketing, helping brands create authentic, inclusive campaigns that resonate with diverse audiences. The visit reinforced that representation isn’t just a buzzword—it’s essential for growth, innovation, and consumer trust.

Representation Matters

Throughout the trip, I was reminded of how vital representation is in professional spaces. Walking into these corporate environments as a young Black woman from an HBCU, I felt an immense sense of pride. My presence, my questions, and my contributions mattered. It was a reminder that we belong in these rooms, at these tables, and in these conversations.

More Than Just a Trip

Beyond the professional takeaways, this experience was about building relationships and expanding my network. Whether it was a deep conversation on the bus ride, a shared meal with a new friend, or a moment of reflection at the Golden Gate Bridge, every interaction added value to my journey.

Leaving San Francisco, I feel more prepared than ever to take up space, ask the hard questions, and continue breaking barriers in marketing and business. I’m grateful to Bill Imada, Lauren Kim, and the entire NMGZ Community for creating opportunities like this and investing in the future of young professionals like me.

This was more than just a trip—it was a catalyst for growth, confidence, and the pursuit of excellence. I can’t wait to take what I’ve learned and pay it forward.
